I don't want to have to pick one thing to change. Both. All. All of the above.
I want to see a change to a hopeful and demanding way of thinking, away from a scarcity mindset and towards a mindset of community.
A removal of binaries in casting. Less praise to cishet middle class white men for average work. More space for artists to see each others work and talk to each other outside of competition.
More queer people, women, people of the global majority, working class people and disabled people in positions of power. More queer people, women, people of the global majority, working class people and disabled people everywhere in the arts world, not just at the bottom of the food chain.
A requirement to get confirmation from a dancer who has worked with you that you treated them well in order to get funding as a choreographer.
I want to see a universal basic income for artists, and for all people. I want a radical change away from artists having to prioritise making money above their art. I want to see a radical change away from artists having to prioritise their art over their health.
I want all of this and more.
I keep coming back to this article by Miguel Gutierrez. It's honesty has stuck with me for weeks and I think everyone should read it. I am inspired also by FACT San Francisco who are offering a payment of $25 for the labour it takes to complete the application. Institutions can drive change if they really want to.
I sent the above manifesto on an application, because you have to practice what you preach. I think an artistic practice is made up of lots of little protests, and anger is helpful.
